As you traverse your career you will leave a trail of footsteps behind you. Some people collect friends and colleagues and supporters along the way. When they talk about the value of their network, they mean the people who have worked with them, as coworkers, bosses and even vendors. It is important to remember, as you make career decisions, that you may cast a long shadow with impulsive or relationship-harming decisions. Don’t believe that your current supervisor will never hear the bad things you had to say. If you chose to quit without notice or to join a competitor, you may not return to the source of your employment for kind words and assistance in the future. It is important to remember those who were there with a job when you needed one, and the effect your behavior may have on their business or reputation. Think twice about burning those bridges, for the proper feeding of a healthy career!

Managing work groups, even small ones, can be very challenging. Group dynamics issues, such as taking sides, exerting influence and down-right bullying keep Dilbert entertaining, and managers on their toes. Many work groups will function at their best when there is a high-volume of work. It seems a time when co-operation is high. If you want to see productivity and enthusiasm fade, let a couple people in the department stop getting along. It can take the life out of a business like a death-eater. Using such destructive techniques as: ignoring others, rolling eyes, heavy sighing, not speaking, showing angry behaviors like stomping around, being “too busy” to exchange a good morning are all techniques used by people everyday to express their unhappiness with their co-workers, manager or job. This is counter-productive. If you employ these techniques, you may find the situation deteriorates, and then there are two unhappy employees and many nervous co-workers. When problems arise, take that person aside, air out your grievances, stay respectful and kind and you should do OK. Be the person who makes the effort to keep cordial relationships with everyone and you should go far.
