The holidays can be a stressful time to be unemployed. Best strategies to manage stress include remembering to take time for yourself and remembering to keep up your employment search. Contrary to the thoughts of many, assuming that employers are waiting until the new year to hire, it is common for hires to be made at year-end for a variety of reasons. These include meeting budget quotas, unexpected new orders, or favorable financial expectations. For the job-seeker, it is a great time to be competing in the job market, because many currently employed candidates will not be available until after the year-end bonuses and holiday parties have concluded. Less competition means more opportunities for YOU! While interviewing a candidate recently, she definitely gave me the impression that things could not be worse for the economy. Fortunately, the healthcare market is robust. For greater success in your interviews, may I suggest you check, and double check your presentation. Interviews are not the occasion to wear holiday sweaters, sparkly eye-make-up, or to discuss your religion. Nothing will serve you better than appearing, neat, clean, serious, and prepared for the interview. You may find staffing agencies with opportunities at this time of year, and they can open many doors for you. So if you haven’t considered temporary work now may be the best time to register!

Many candidates mention that completing online applications for every employer is a very time-consuming process. I thought I would write a few lines to give you some insight into how important that online application is. One thing that is very important is that everything in the application be truthful. Double-check your dates of employment. Be sure everything you write is accurate. If you don’t have a degree but attended or are attending a college, make this clear. CAREFULLY read the application instructions. Our application says, “don’t paste your resume in” and also requests the “past five years of your employment history”. The application is a reflection of your “work product”, and you want to convey how meticulous you can be in your attention to detail, how scrupulously honest and careful with your words you are! Successful candidates learn to handle difficult situations with truth and brevity. If you left your last job due to a difficult boss, find a positive way to phrase this. An example might be: seeking a better cultural fit, or something along those lines. That potential new boss that is interviewing you is thinking they are hearing what you will say about them in your next interview! HR people are actually not trying to make things more difficult for you. They are hoping to make the best fit for both the candidates and the employer. Put your best foot forward, check the details, check the spelling, and make sure it’s complete. Blanks for requested information, or N/A’s for salary, position title, the name of the company you worked for, may not be interpreted in your favor. Good luck with those online aps! And for best results, follow-up with a cover letter and resume!
